DMBG calls for Territory workforce needs to be recognised in migration policy
The Northern Territory’s workforce needs must be recognised in Australia’s migration debate.
Darwin Major Business Group welcomes the recognition of regional workforce needs in the Coalition’s proposed migration policy, including dedicated
Skilled Project Visas, protection of regional migration programs and continued pathways for graduates of regional universities.
These proposals warrant close attention. Their value for the Territory will depend on the detail: who qualifies, how quickly employers can access workers, and whether the arrangements support people to stay and build their lives here.
Territory businesses need clarity on how the proposals would support major projects, local suppliers,
Charles Darwin University graduates, and employers across construction, tourism, hospitality, agriculture and care services.
A project workforce also needs a functioning community around it: homes, health services, childcare, transport and education. Workforce and housing policy must be planned together.
DMBG’s Beetaloo Development Outlook work reinforces the importance of preparing for growth across the whole economy. That preparation includes developing local skills and providing practical migration pathways where workforce gaps remain.
We encourage all parties to explain how their migration policies will meet the Northern Territory’s distinct needs.
National policy must give the Territory room to grow, and the workforce to deliver.
