Australia’s energy demand is growing – what could it mean for the Territory?

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has put some very large numbers around Australia’s future electricity needs.

Its latest outlook forecasts electricity consumption across the National Electricity Market will grow by more than 40% over the next decade, with data centres among the major drivers.

AEMO says meeting that demand reliably will require a mix of renewables, storage, transmission and flexible gas.

The Northern Territory is not part of the National Electricity Market, but the report raises an important question for us: could Beetaloo help meet Australia’s growing energy needs, and what would be required to make that happen?

How Australia’s future energy system should be designed is a matter for energy experts. DMBG’s interest is what this could mean for the Territory.

What infrastructure would be needed? What decisions must governments and industry make? And how could development deliver lasting benefits for Territorians?

These questions deserve serious, evidence-based consideration, and the Territory should be part of that national conversation.
